Once Jesus is bound like a common criminal, he is led to Annas, who was the high priest when young Jesus amazed the teachers at the temple. Acts 4:6: “And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.” According to Jewish history, Quirinus, the imperial Governor of Syria (cf. 2 in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. (Luke 2:42, 47) Some of Annas’ sons later served as high priest, and now his son-in-law Caiaphas holds that position. While Jesus is at the home of Annas, Caiaphas has time to assemble the Sanhedrin. 3 And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; . 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, Annas sent Him to Caiaphas . Caiaphas and Annas. Their interrelationship is difficult to understand but there is a resolution. Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests - Caiaphas was the son-in-law of Annas or Ananias, and it is supposed that they exercised the high priest's office by turns. Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas (John 18:13) and was also called a “high priest.” Similarly, Luke states that John the Baptist also served “in the priesthood of Annas and Caiphas.” (Luke 3:2). At that moment, Caiaphas had served some 12 years in office, having succeeded his brother-in-law Eleazar ben Ananus, one of Annas’s five sons to become high priest. In John 18:13, we see Annas playing a major part in Jesus' trial, an indication he may have advised or controlled Caiaphas, even after Annas was deposed. Annas, his father-in-law, served as high priest before him and got five of his relatives appointed to that office. So, officially, Caiaphas, the son-in-law of Annas, was high priest during Jesus’ ministry, but Annas, the former high priest, still held significant sway and was still called a high priest . When Jesus was arrested in Gethsemane, He was brought before Annas to be questioned (John 18:13; 19–23).
